Recent Food and Drink Federation (FDF) research, which revealed that UK exports of food and non-alcoholic drinks have hit record levels, is good news for the processing and packaging machinery sector as well.
According to the FDF, exports were worth £9.23bn in 2008, up 20% in value terms on the year before. Star performers included biscuits (up 15.3%), breakfast cereals (up 12.5%), cakes (up 12%), chocolate (up 10.9%) and sauces and condiments (up 21%). Central Europe was one of the standout regions for exports with Hungary up 74.3% and Poland up 53.6%.
The UK market also appears more buoyant with both Sainsbury’s and Tesco recently reporting increases in sales, Just last week, Sainsbury’s announced that its like-for-like sales were up 7.8% for the 12 weeks up to 13 June, whilst Tesco reported its UK first-quarter sales had risen by 4.3%.
Ian Crawford, Group Exhibition Director for the PPMA Show 2009 and Total Processing & Packaging 2010, says all these developments bode well for the next PPMA Show, which takes place at the NEC at the end of September. …/ “Clearly there are still major business opportunities for food and drink manufacturers and this in turn is leading to continuing demand for processing and packaging solutions that can help to deliver enhancements and efficiencies to production lines,” he comments.
“Meeting the latest industry requirements has always been a major focus for the PPMA Show. With issues such as convenience, easy opening, ease of use, maximising shelf life, minimising food waste and product and pack safety and security being important drivers in the development of new products, the exhibition remains the ideal place to find out how machinery manufacturers are continuing to respond to these challenges. Visitors will therefore find a wealth of equipment that maximises throughput, minimises downtime and delivers excellent speed and reliability to help to make operations leaner and more efficient.”
Mr Crawford says over 80% of available floor space has already been sold for the PPMA Show 2009 and the event has attracted a further 16 first time exhibitors from the food and drink sector, including Interfood Technology, VC 999 UK and wenglor sensoric. Other top names taking part this year include Schubert, Ishida Europe, Reiser, Ulma Packaging, Grote Company, Rovema Packaging Machines, OCS Checkweighers, PAGO, Raque Food Systems, Euromark Coding & Marking and T Freemantle.
The PPMA Show 2009 takes place at the NEC Birmingham, from September 29th to October 1st. To register to visit the exhibition free, go to www.ppmashow.co.uk/register.
