The UK’s premier packaging solutions company, Sirane Ltd, is already breaking new commercial and production ground following its successful acquisition of Hereford-based Thomas and Green (T&G).
‘We are delighted to be servicing our new and joint order book,’ says Simon Balderson, Sirane Director. Sirane has already committed to expand its Telford factory by a further 50% - creating an extra 20,000 ft to the new Stafford Park facilities which it moved into in Easter of this year.
Balderson says that ‘the feedback from all our European packaging markets continues to be very positive – and we are actively strengthening our sales and agency networks to match: Customers need more range and innovation in the absorbency area of packaging and we are now in a great position to provide it for them. T&G’s long-established order book has responded very well to the Sirane brand and reputation – both for product innovation and for our commercial expertise on matters of lead-time and delivery.’
Balderson adds that ‘despite the recent growth, we at Sirane are still scratching the surface in terms of Europe’s needs for absorbent packaging,’ says Balderson. ‘We are creating many new products for new markets – and a new team is currently being formed for that purpose under the leadership of Ian Beardsall.’
One important strand of new product development in the healthcare market is already in progress: Says Jonathan Mason of Sirane who is leading the initiative; ‘the Thomas and Green takeover has, for one thing, given Sirane an ideal platform to immediately expand our packaging opportunities in the Healthcare market. We shall be investing and further developing niche products in this area. The flagship product will be Sirane’s newly modified ranges of cellosene wadding (soft multiply tissues) which finds applications in all kinds of healthcare businesses. We shall also be developing this kind of packaging further for the preservation and mortuary sectors.’
In order to widen the offering to these healthcare markets, Sirane has just invested in specialist converting machinery, which will play its part in extending and developing the product range. New investment at Sirane in low-cost and high-speed lamination machinery has also come about because of the recent acquisition: This facility is now operating round-the-clock in order to serve Sirane’s product needs.
Mason adds that ‘we have acquired some niche air freshener converting business in UK and Europe and the machinery to progress this technology. The wax laminator offers a range of scrim boneguard products plus the scope to laminate a variety of substrates by wax for burger interleaving products and for industrial metal protection/transit products – all of which will widen our exposure and opportunities for different sectors..;’
Sirane director Simon Balderson adds that ‘our expansion in the Healthcare area is just the first slice of packaging development that the market can expect from us this year as a result of the T&G takeover. There are many other kinds of packaging innovations that we shall be introducing in the coming months – not least in time for the Xmas market; in food and food service packaging.
Balderson adds that ‘in recent days, mergers and acquisitions have been in the news for perhaps all the wrong reasons. Conversely, we are happy to report that all the Sirane and T&G client feedback has been extremely positive. In essence we are able to offer both sets of customers more – in terms of service, innovation and commercial ‘critical mass’. Moreover, we have the vision and the track record to make Europe’s absorbent packaging business into the best of its kind.’
Sirane’s growth in absorbency-based packaging has been based on a customer-driven operation with regard to commercial matters such as short lead-times and delivery. The company’s innovations in the compostable/degradable packaging area – marketed under the Dri-Fresh Resolve brands – have also been setting the pace for the industry supply-side and been winning friends and orders in the retail and supermarketing worlds. Over 35% of Sirane’s current sales are based on products that were not manufactured one year ago.’ Sirane’s new Stafford Park, Telford operation is well on its way to achieving a £10million turnover by the end of this calendar year – and the T&G takeover brings this objective ever nearer: The new factory occupies some 65,000 sq ft and Balderson pledges that 'we are equipping it to the highest possible standards - aiming to make Sirane the safest and most hygienic food packaging company in Europe.'
Sirane next exhibiting commitment will see the company showing its wares – including the new healthcare lines – at the leading French packaging exhibition, Embellage 08 in Paris in November of this year. All further details from Sirane at: www.sirane.co.uk
